Dark Mode in iOS 13 significantly helps iPhone battery life, robotic test showsOctober 20, 2019
The iPhone iOS 13 update which brought everyone’s favorite update – the Dark Mode – to life may just have a special feature that will make you love it even more!
Aside from rolling out the Dark Mode for other applications and websites as well, the Dark Mode is actually better for saving on battery life than the Light Mode.
In a test using a robotic arm to simulate actions on an iPhone XS, it was found that when the iOS was used in Light Mode to complete various actions, the battery did not take too long to drain. However, the Dark Mode surprised us! With the use of the Messages application, Google Maps navigation, YouTube viewing, and other simulations, the iPhone XS performed significantly better in Dark Mode. The battery was seen draining at a slower speed than in Light Mode. At the time that the Light Mode iPhone XS was shutting down, the one on dark mode seemed to have about 30% battery still to go!
A detail worth mentioning was that while the testing was being done, the iPhone brightness level was kept at 200 nits. There is a small difference between the brightness in the Light and Dark Modes but the iPhone XS outlasted the battery of the Light Mode each time it was tested.
The Dark Mode affects the battery the most in phones which have an OLED display. This means that the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 Pro are going to end up saving a load of battery if used on the Dark Mode whereas the iPhone XR and the iPhone 11 will not perform similarly.
